PRESET YOUR CAMERA

Set your camera to an aperture that gives you a good working depth of field. For example, using hyperfocal distance charts as a guide, we determined that when using a 35mm focal length and focusing on something 15 feet away, an aperture of f/8 would give you sharpness from about 8.5 feet to 127 feet. If your main subjects are within that range, they will be sharp. This means you can raise your camera to your eye, compose, and snap without refocusing the lens. If you can’t separate the focus from the shutter release (see tip box,), then switch to manual focus and you won’t have to worry about the camera refocusing on you.

Depth of field and hyperfocal charts are available online and as apps for your smartphone, making it easier to predetermine your settings to get the depth of field you want. Learn just a few of the settings and it will be easier to photograph quickly. This is how many photojournalists traditionally used their rangefinder cameras. Ever wondered how men in bulky space suits focused those cameras on the moon? They were prefocused using this technique. All they had to do was make sure their subject was beyond the minimum focused distance. Note that compact digital cameras have a much greater depth of field at the same aperture settings as DSLRs, due to a smaller sensor, so even at apertures of f/3.5 and f/4, more is in focus, so you may not need to worry much about the depth of field.
